Videography

A Visual Diary – November 2021

After completing my first visual diary in October, I decided to continue the series into November — this time with a focus on experimentation. I wanted to expand beyond simply documenting daily life and start playing with different technical and creative approaches to see how they could change the tone and emotion of my footage.

Throughout the month, I experimented with shooting at different frame rates and resolutions, which allowed me to explore the possibilities of slow motion and cropping flexibility in post. These small adjustments opened up a new way of seeing motion — how something as simple as a hand movement, falling snow, or our dog running through the yard could take on a completely different feeling when slowed down or reframed.

Lighting also became a major part of my exploration. I began testing how controlled light could shape mood, highlight texture, or draw focus in a scene. It pushed me to think more like a filmmaker than a photographer — not just capturing moments as they happened, but shaping how they were experienced through light and timing.

Perhaps the biggest growth moment for me this month was stepping outside my comfort zone. I challenged myself to ask permission to film in places where I normally wouldn’t — the hair salon, larger family gatherings, and other environments that initially felt intimidating. That courage paid off. Those shots added dimension and movement to the project that wouldn’t have been possible if I had stayed in my safe zone.

By the end of the month, I could feel my confidence behind the camera growing. I was learning not just how to operate the equipment, but how to see in motion — to anticipate moments, shape light, and tell a visual story without relying on words.

This project was another meaningful step forward in my journey to learn videography. It reminded me that growth happens when you’re willing to experiment, make mistakes, and put yourself in situations that stretch you. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and even more excited for what’s next.
